Nostalgia: Donkey Charlie “earns right to live out life in peace”

Charlie, the oldest animal at Tannaghmore Gardens, was due to retire at the end of the summer in 1977.

The 20 year old Welsh pony had been at Tannaghmore for four years, having been brought from Newry where he worked on a milk round.

“He has certainly earned the right to live out the rest of his life in peace,” said Tom Coleman, man in charge at the animal enclosure.

In the picture Tom leads Charlie as he gives a ride to six year old Stephanie Molloy and David Stewart (7).
