Nostalgia: Nurse on mercy mission to Ethiopia

A Craigavon nurse set off in 1985 to spend two years helping to save children in famine stricken Ethiopia.

Twenty-three-year-old Pamela Mackle, a newly qualified midwife, was going to treat pregnant women in the African country.

She said: “I have always wanted to do relief work. The situation is really terrible.”

She was going to work with three or four other colleagues in a refugee camp where the only contact with the outside world will be the passing food trucks.

Pamela is pictured receiving a cheque for the Ethiopian Appeal Fund from Lismore pupils Karen Kane. The money was raised by an all night vigil.

Also pictured are Mr JP McVeigh, Principal, Mr McDonald, organiser of the vigil, and Mrs McAleavey, school co-ordinator of the Ethiopian Appeal Fund.
