LURGAN under 11s are through to the Plate semi-final after defeating CIYMS in the quarter-final.

Losing the toss CI elected to bat first and Harry Long and Josh Gibson took the new ball. First change bowlers Jon Woods and Peter Hutchinson made breakthroughs for Lurgan.

CI’s best batsmen hit six boundaries on his way to 37. Woods continued his accuracy and bowled his four overs for only eight runs and collected another wicket. Captain Max Lyttle also bowled very well, and collected three wickets for 15 runs. Michael Newton took the final wicket as CI finished with 81 for seven in their 20 overs.

A run rate of four an over was always going to be a tough test against a well drilled CI side, especially when their star player opened with great pace.

This was the fastest bowling that the boys had encountered so far this year and it appeared their wicketkeeper was in the same predicament. A total of 21 byes were added to the Lurgan cause.

Captain Lyttle joined Newton at the crease and punished any bad bowling before being brilliantly caught for 15. Another great catch took care of Harry Long who was soon followed into the clubhouse by Michael Newton.

Daniel Kilpatrick joined Woods at the crease and the two players began to pick off singles. Their departure and the subsequent dismissal of Gibson left the Lurgan men needing 15 runs off the last four overs with just three wickets remaining.

Ryan Allen and Jonny Warren took on the responsibility and played a straight bat. A maiden and a single off the next left an uphill task before Warren relieved the pressure with a beautiful cover drive. The final over started with the match finely balanced with six runs needed to take Lurgan to the semi-final. Ryan Allen played two textbook pull shots and with excellent running from both boys Lurgan crept home with two balls to spare.
