McDonald’s has announced it will be bringing out a new line of plant-based, meat-free alternatives, suitable for those who follow a vegetarian or vegan diet. The new food range, named McPlant, is set to include breakfast sandwiches, plant-based burgers and chicken substitutes. ‘We are excited about the opportunity’ The fast food business has already tested out a plant-based burger in Canada with Beyond Meat - a company that produces plant-based food products. McDonald’s says it will now be testing the meat-free menu burger in key markets next year. Ian Borden, who heads up McDonald's international operations, said, "We are excited about the opportunity because we believe we have a proven, delicious-tasting product. The company has not yet revealed which supplier it will be using for its line of McPlant food products, but Beyond Meat insists it is still involved, saying, "Beyond Meat and McDonald's co-created the plant-based patty which will be available as part of their McPlant platform.” What does the meat-free burger taste like? Not all meat-free alternatives taste the same, but McDonald’s says it has created a plant-based burger which still delivers the fast-food chain’s “iconic taste.” The company said, “In fact, we think our culinary team nailed it. There are other plant-based burgers out there, but the McPlant delivers our iconic taste in a sink-your-teeth-in (and wipe-your-mouth) kind of sandwich.” The burger consists of a plant-based patty and is served on a warm, sesame seed bun with all the classic toppings. “Markets can adopt the McPlant when they’re ready and we expect some to test the burger next year,” the chain adds.
