Revealed: Londonderry’s food hygiene scores

Four businesses in the area were given a score of one out of five which means ‘Major Improvements Are Necessary’ to the way in which these food outlets manage food hygiene. There were no zero out of five ratings.

The four businesses to score one out of five were Brown’s In Town (January 8, 2015), The Anchor Inn (August 24, 2014), Far East Chinese Takeaway (November 21, 2014) and Grab & Go (April 18, 2014)

Five businesses were awarded the marginally better score of two out of five but again, that comes with the tag of ‘improvement necessary’.

The five businesses to be awarded two out five for food hygiene were Asta European Food Shop (September 17, 2014), Crawford’s Home Bakery (November 26, 2014), Faughan Valley Service Station (October 23, 2014), McGinley’s Food to Go and Butchers on the Northland Road (October 21, 2013) and Peoples’ Public House (December 16, 2013)

Out of the remaining businesses inspected, 79 scored three out of five which means ‘generally satisfactory’, 253 scored four out of five which means ‘good’ and 495 emerged with the top score of five out of five which means ‘very good’.

When inspectors visit premises they assess hygiene standards by looking at the premises, the kind of food made/prepared on site, how staff work and the individual business’ food management system.

Ratings are based on three criteria:

- how the food is handled

- the condition and cleanliness of the premises

- the management of the business which includes good record keeping.
