Sadness as Maghera bakery closes after 72 years

A simple message thanking customers for their loyalty appeared on its final batch of products.
It is believed that the firm on the Coleraine Road employed approximately 30 workers.

Hide AdFormer Magherafelt councillor and family friend, George Shiels said Alex Hyndman was ahead of his time when he founded the company in 1949.
“His bread was par excellence and very, very popular in the community,” he said. “They were great employers over the years and this will be missed in the town.”
Mr Shiels said it was a sad time for Maghera as Hyndman’s has been closely connected with the community for so many years.
Many people paid tribute to the firm on social media once news of the closure became known.

Hide AdOne former customer said it was a terrible loss for the area and expressed the hope the workers would find new jobs.
“Their bread was delicious, especially fruit cake and their sodas were the best in the country,” she said.
Local DUP Councillor Kyle Black expressed regret at the closure.
He said: “It is a sad day for the local community and many people further afield.

Hide Ad“Hyndman’s bakery has such a strong history and affiliation with the people of Maghera and I am sorry that we have lost this local business and that jobs have been lost.”
His party colleague and Mid Ulster MLA Keith Buchanan said news that Hyndman’s Bakery has ceased trading was “deeply regrettable” especially as it was a long and well established company.
