Students ‘SPICE’ it up at SRC

Southern Regional College’s SPICE Project is a new and innovative project offered to 16-24 year olds who are Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET).

The SPICE Project supports young people who feel that a mainstream educational or training environment doesn’t suit their needs.

It gives participants the opportunity to acquire new skills and realise their potential in an approach that may not be considered conventional. SPICE programmes are free of charge and to make the programmes accessible to all users offering additional support for travel and childcare costs in some instances.

To date the SPICE Project has engaged with in excess of 190 particpants throughout the southern area. There have been 111 participants who have completed a diverse range of both accredited and non-accredited courses which range from Catering to Customer Services and Childcare to Counselling.

There are also students who enrolled on mainstream accredited programmes such as Public Services and Introduction to Counselling Skills due to the intervention and support strategies from SPICE.

Participants who have engaged on the SPICE Programme are from a host of community, statutory and voluntary organisations, such as Probation Board, Youth Justice Agency, Craigavon Young Persons Partnership, Drumgor Detached Youth Project, JIMS Youth Group, SHSCT 16+ Employability Team, Surestart Programmes, Jobs & Benefits and the SAM Project.
