Ulster Scots Cultural Night at Civic Centre

Over 300 Ulster Scots enthusiasts descended on Craigavon Civic and Conference Centre for a special cultural evening celebrating the Ulster Scots vibrant heritage and its influence on the local area.

The event was a mix of dance, music, literature and culinary delights providing an insight into the tradition of Ulster-Scots across the Borough. Key speakers on the night included BBC TV and Radio Presenter Liam Logan.

Ulster Scots music and dance was performed by a host of top class performers including Bleary & District Pipe Band, Mark Wilson and Bernagh Folk Group, Markethill Highland dancers, World Championship winning Drum Major Lauren Abraham and award winning local singers Caitlin Cousins and Alice Cartmill and family.

The event was also the perfect opportunity to showcase a newly developed publication “Ulster Scots in Craigavon”. This innovative publication highlights Ulster Scots tradition across the Borough and was supported by Council and the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure on the recommendation of the Ministerial Advisory Group on the Ulster Scots Academy.

Chair of the Development Committee, Councillor Carla Lockhart, commented: “I am delighted to see so many local Ulster Scots enthusiasts come along to this fantastic event which was full of wonderful music, dance and literature recitals detailing the Borough’s vibrant Ulster Scots culture and heritage. The publication showcased on the night contains a treasure trove of historical information on Ulster Scots and is the perfect read for people interested in researching this area further.”
