If the stars were instruments, how might they sound?

Lough Neagh Discovery Centre at Oxford Island was last year launched as the first Dark Sky site in Northern Ireland and to celebrate the centre will be hosting a musical evening with a difference.

Craigavon Borough Council’s Conversation Team have partnered with the Armagh Observatory and award winning composer Robert Jarvis to launch the ‘aroundNorth’ project’s week-long countrywide tour before it takes up permanent residency in Armagh Observatory.

The event, on Thursday, March 12, from 6.30pm to 9.30pm, will see sonic-art project ‘aroundNorth’ transform the night sky into a celestial music box rotating around Polaris, the North Star.

As each star passes a virtual line in the sky, it triggers a musical note rather like the pins of a musical box and based on its colour spectrum, mass, brightness and distance from earth, creates a mesmerising sound map of the universe.
