“I understand that Derry City Council, together with citywide stakeholders, will formally bid for the title of Irish City of Culture,” she stated, in response to a Question tabled by UKIP MLA David McNarry.

She said she had not received a formal application for funding but that she would encourage all cities to consider applying for the title.

Ms Ní Chuilín acknowledged Londonderry’s “significant socio-economic problems, with quality of life in the City at a lower level than Belfast and significantly below the best performing European Cities.”

She stated: “Therefore, I am keen that the City pursues all opportunities which can improve quality of life for those most in need.”

According to Derry City Council’s Legacy Plan - details of which were first published here in October - serious consideration will also be given to a bid for European Capital of Culture in 2023.
