Beating obesity through weight loss challenge in Garvagh

Earlier this month the Jim Watt Sport Centre in Garvagh hosted the launch of the ’Community Weight Loss Challenge’.

The health orientated initiative is designed to educate participants on improving their lifestyles and is running in conjunction with a health fayre at the Centre, which will take place next month.

Richard Dennison, Rural Facilities Assistant Manager at Coleraine Borough Council, explained more about the project: “Obesity is an issue affecting people of all ages, and the best way of treating it is to eat healthy, reduce your calorie intake and exercise regularly.

“It is our aim at the JIm Watt Sportsw Centre to provide the local community with the support and education they need to have a fitter, healthier lifestyle.

“The Gym at the Centre has all the equipment and expert advice required to support and sustain a health orientated weight loss program and staff are

motivated, highly qualified and eager to assist.”

The project will last for six weeks, and during the challenge there will be localised support through qualified nutritionists and health professionals who will give the teams expert advice on weight loss and body conditioning exercise.

At the end of the project the winner will gain a free 10 month membership at the gym, and a fabulous pamper session.

Richard is encouraging those who have signed up to support their friends and family through the challenge.

The Centre will be hosting a special event next month, April 25. A number of activities will be running on the day including a presentation for the Winners of the Community Weight Loss Challenge and School Healthy Meal Picture Competition, Tug of War, a visit from the North Coast Classic

Tractor Run, also on offer will be kids entertainment, health tests, cancer screening, information stalls, complimentary refreshments and loads more.
