25 vital life saving throw lines stolen

In light of the thefts, Mayor of Coleraine, councillor David Harding has appealed to the public to help repremand those responsible.

There are around 80 pieces of public rescue equipment around rivers and beaches in the Coleraine Borough Council area, these are checked on a weekly basis, the Mayor says that lives could be lost if they are not replaced when discovered missing.

In light of the thefts, Mayor of Coleraine, Councillor David Harding made a public plea: “These thefts are simply unacceptable. Apart from the significant cost of replacement to the ratepayer, this mindless destruction is potentially putting people’s lives at risk. These throw lines are strategically placed along the riverbank for use in an emergency situation. A missing or damaged throw line obviously jeopardizes the chance of a successful rescue.

“I would appeal to any members of the public who witness such mindless behaviour to report it to the local Police Service and Coleraine Borough Council straightaway.”
