Attempt made to abduct 16 year old girl

DETECTIVES in Lisburn are investigating the attempted abduction of a 16-year-old girl on the Belsteele Road last week.

At 11.30pm last Friday, a dark coloured van stopped beside the teenager as she was walking alone in the area.

A man got out of the vehicle and attempted to pull the girl into the van. It is believed there were two other men inside the van.

A local man saw what was happening and came to the girl’s aid. The van then made off with the three men on board.

Police say the man who got out of the vehicle is described as being in his 40’s, of stocky build, with short dark hair, a dark bushy beard and spoke with an Irish accent.

The 16-year-old girl is approximately 5’3” in height and of slim build.

At the time of the incident she had her blonde hair worn in a ponytail and was wearing a pink floral top and jeans.

A spokesperson for the police in Lisburn said cases of attempted abduction of women are rare.

“Police do not want people to be unduly concerned as incidents like this remain extremely rare,” said the spokesperson.

“Our advice as always is to keep your own personal safety paramount in your mind at all times.

“Sensible precautions to take can include never walking alone after dark and advising someone of your movements and when you can be expected home.”
