Baby unscathed aswindow smashed in suspected sectarian attack

The window was broken after a gang hurling sectarian abuse chased a man in his twenties into the house in Meehan’s Terrace.

Police are treating the assault on the young man in the Dungiven Road area as a sectarian hate crime.

At about 12.30am on Monday, July 20, a man in his twenties was walking home when he was chased by a group of youths who shouted sectarian abuse and threw bottles and stones at him.

The group followed him to a house at Meehan’s Terrace, and after he had gone inside, a stone was thrown and broke a bedroom window. The youth was unhurt.

Constable Marshall said a three year old child was sleeping in the room at the time of the incident but luckily was not injured.

She added: “We would like to hear from witnesses who were in vicinity of Dungiven Road, Glendermott Road, Bentley Terrace or Meehan Terrace at approximately 12.30pm to 1am and who can help identify those involved in this incident.”
