Ballymena Courthouse closure slammed

DUP representatives Paul Reid and Gregg McKeen have condemned the Department of Justice's closure of Ballymena Courthouse, which the DOJ claims will save £220,000 a year.

Cllr Reid said that lack of public transport would make it more difficult for defendants and witnesses to reach other courthouses, and could result in an increase in the number of bench warrants issued.

Ald McKeen added that while the Minister has maintained that the closure is a cost-saving measure, the DOJ remain financially responsible for the upkeep and maintenace of the listed Ballymena courthouse after its closure, as it is for Larne courthouse. The DUP men called on the Justice Minister to reverse the closure decision.
