Beware of phone scammers operating across south Derry - Kearney

SDLP Mid Ulster Councillor Martin Kearney has warned local communities about potential phone scammers operating especially around the area of Maghera.

“Over the past couple of weeks a number of incidents have been reported of repeated nuisance calls especially in the BT46 area. On one occasion a local resident was woken from her bed in the early morning on four occasions to answer the phone,” said Councillor Kearney.

“The victims of this harassment were then called by an organisation that offers to end all nuisance calls for a fee. This is highly suspect and would appear to be part of a scam. The local accents of those offering the service would also suggest that they are operating from the locality.”

“It is vital that people keep their wits about them and never give out personal or payment details over the phone to an unsolicited call.

“If you are receiving nuisance calls then get in touch with your service provider who should be able to stop the problem for you. As we approach the Autumn and Winter periods there always seems to be an increase in these types of calls.”
