Bid to bring Time Team to Enagh

A LONDONDERRY community group has invited Channel 4’s Time Team to the city to explore the rich historical and archaeological heritage of the Enagh Lough area of Strathfoyle and Maydown.

Enagh Youth Form has written to the production team behind the hit Tony Robinson-fronted series asking it to consider the area’s neolithic and medieval heritage as a potential subject for a televised dig in time for City of Culture 2013.

The bid has the support of Derry City Council, the Irish Society, St Oliver Plunkett’s Primary School and the local Women’s Group.

Paul Hughes of Enagh Youth Forum explained: “Our group has carried out a lot of research regarding Enagh Lough with a view to inviting the Channel 4 Time Team programme to carry out a dig in the area given the historical significance of the area.

“We are really hoping that this project can happen during the build up to UK Derry/Londonderry City of Culture and have support from Derry City Council and the local primary and secondary schools.”

The Forum wrote to Time Team inviting them to investigate Enagh Lough, explaining that the idea was suggested by local teenagers.

The project has “great community support from the local Women’s Group, Youth Club, Primary School and the local library in Strathfoyle and we believe that a visit from the Time Team would not only instil a sense of ‘pride of place’ locally but also bring people together and educate everyone about times gone by at the local Enagh Lough.”

Mr Hughes made the point that the research project on Enagh Lough informing the bid would not have been possible without the continued support of Strathfoyle Library.

“With our local rural library now under threat of reduced hours, we at Enagh Youth Forum would like to encourage everyone to make it a point to visit Strathfoyle Library on Monday 7th November (Strathfoyle Library Borrowers Day) from 2pm onwards and take out books. And if your not a member then register on Monday 7th! Use it or lose it!” he said.
