Brighter Nights programme finishes with summer party

Last Friday (August 30) saw the final evening of this year’s Brighter Nights programme go off with a bang with an End of Summer Party.

Lilian Bland Community Park came to life every Friday over the summer with a different themed night each week. An outdoor cinema and live music featured amongst the many themed nights which included circus skills, street theatre, family fun and magic show and crazy golf.

The summer programme, which was organised by the council and funded through the CAN Peace III Partnership, saw hundreds of people flock to the park every week for the free family entertainment.

Speaking about the success of the event, Jenni Coulter, the council’s Business Development Officer for Arts and Culture commented: “The Brighter Nights programme went down a treat and we were unusually lucky with the weather on some of the weeks!

“No matter what the weather was like, everyone still turned out week after week for the activities. Each week was different which meant we had a huge variety of activities on throughout the summer, ensuring there was something for everyone.”

Meanwhile, following the success of this year’s events, the council’s Leisure Committee this week agreed that a similar initiative be delivered at Lilian Bland Community Park next summer, with a budget of £15,000.

SDLP councillor Noreen McClelland described the 2013 Brighter Nights programme as “very successful” and said that the feedback from people who’d attended this year’s events had been “excellent.”
