Carrick trio named in New Year Honours

Veteran Alderman Jim Brown is one of three Carrickfergus Borough residents recognised in the New Year Honours list.

The independent representative, who has been a member of Carrick Council since 1981, receives an MBE for services to local government.

Mr Brown commented: “I’m delighted to have been considered and humbled to have been chosen because when I look at others on the list it’s apparent there’s much work going on in our community and our borough. I would like to congratulate them.” Suggesting it was unique for an independent to be chosen, Mr Brown added it shows they “still have a voice in our community.”

Formerly an Ulster Unionist representative, he was mayor on five occasions. He is also chair of the Northern Ireland Local Government Partnership on Traveller Issues and vice-chair of the Northern Ireland Housing Council.

Also awarded an MBE is Kathleen Ferguson, founder and Honorary Secretary of Brainwaves Northern Ireland, for services to people with brain tumours and their families. The Whitehead resident said it was recognition of all the people involved with the charity.

Meanwhile, Geraldine Duggan, vice-chair of Belfast Lough Sailability, receives a BEM for services to sailing and people with disabilities.
