Condolences to soldier's family

Books of condolence have been opened in Lurgan Town Hall and across the borough.

The 26-year-old was murdered by a rogue Afghan soldier last Tuesday morning, July 13, along with two of Gurkha colleagues.

Following a minute's silence at this Monday's council meeting, Alderman Sydney Anderson, acting as chairman, expressed his sadness and shock at the news of Neal's death.

He said: "Born and educated in Portadown, Neal was born to lead and it is important we remember him and his fallen comrades."

Alderman Arnold Hatch said: "It is only at times like this that you appreciate the dedication of the soldiers and Neal was a man that was ready to offer help to anyone."

George Savage said: "Families have lost many loved ones to serving their country.

"Once you put on that uniform then there is no knowing where it will take you."

Councillor Michael McGolderick said: "I have a nephew who was posted to Kabul the day after his 19th birthday and there will be a big gap now in the Turkington family that won't go away.

"The book of condolence around the borough are a great idea for others to express their sympathies."

Sinn Fein councillors remained outside the chamber while the silence was held and the sympathies expressed.
