Burglaries condemned at council meeting

THE recent spate of burglaries in the area were described as a scourge on society by one councillor at this week’s monthly council meeting.

Mayor of Craigavon Alan Carson condemned the recent burglaries in the area before Councillor Declan McAlinden of the SDLP drew particular attention to recent break-ins to homes in Derrymacash and Derrytrasna

He said: “People need to be vigilant. I would call on people to notify the PSNI if they notice any suspicious activity.”

UUP Alderman Meta Crozier said neighbours of hers were affected by one of the burglaries on the Avenue Road.

She said: “You think it’s never going to happen to you. It’s very traumatic for people to learn that strangers have been in their home looking for things to steal.”

Alderman Crozier added: “I would encourage everybody to look at how their houses are secured.”

Commenting on the burglary in Donaghcloney, Deputy Mayor George Savage said: “This is a scourge on society.

“People are just preying on the elderly. We need to give extra attention to elderly people living in the community and keep an eye on our neighbours.”

Carla Lockhart of the DUP reminded elderly people the council are giving out free burglary packs.

“I would urge elderly people to get in touch if they require one,” she said.
