Lurgan bomb alert declared a hoax

WEDNESDAY night’s security alert in the town centre has been declared a hoax by army bomb experts.

The area around the police station had been sealed off and a number of homes evacuated after a suspect van was driven into Church Place.

The alert was sparked around 5.40pm.

The van had been hijacked a short time earlier in the Lurgantarry area and the owner forced to drive it to the police station.

Army Technical Officers were called to the scene and carried out a controlled explosion - heard across many parts of the town.

On examination the officers found ‘nothing untowards’ in the vehicle.

The driver of the van was not injured during the incident but was left badly shaken,

Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact them on 0845 600 8000 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
