Mark Court attack not sectarian - PSNI

Police have appealed for information about the incident on March 23 when they received reports that a bottle had been thrown at a red Peugeot car at around 11.49pm.

“No damage was caused,” said a spokesperson for the PSNI.

A number of residents had complained that the alleged attack had been described as ‘sectarian’ by the PUP in a statement to the ‘MAIL’ last week. Some were angry that it had been portrayed as a sectarian attack.

Police have now said they are not treating the matter as sectarian.

Residents contacted the ‘MAIL’ to say the community in the Mark Street area was mixed with Catholics, Protestants and Muslim families in the area.

Also they had voiced concerns that a small number of people had been causing misery to neighbours in the community.

The PSNI said: “Anyone who would like to discuss community issues with police is advised to contact them on the 101 number.”

Last week the local branch of the PUP slammed what they described as a ‘sectarian attack’ on a car at Mark Street.

Party spokesman Aaron Dowey said he had received a call from a ‘frightened resident’ who he claimed had been ‘subject to sustained sectarian abuse’ which he said had been going on since July last year.

Several residents voiced their anger at these allegations and concern that it may raise tensions in the area.

One resident who did not want to be named described the allegations as ‘disgraceful’ and said most people in the area lived very well together.

“It is just one that is causing all the trouble for everyone.”

The resident also said the area was very mixed with foreigners and gay people.
