Police receive reports of planned gathering of ‘upwards of 100 young people’ in Newtownabbey

Police have issued an appeal to parents after being made aware of plans for upwards of 100 young people to meet up in the Mossley Pavilion area this weekend.

Commenting on the issue, a PSNI spokesperson said: “We are aware of plans for upwards of 100 young people to meet up in the area of Mossley Pavilion this weekend.

“Recent incidents have shown that alcohol and drugs are likely to be involved.

“Our Neighbourhood Teams will be on patrol all weekend along with colleagues from other agencies.

“The dangers here are obvious and the risk to the health of the young people and the wider community is clear.

“We are strongly calling on parents and guardians to ensure their children are not involved.”

Meanwhile, Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council has said it will be stepping up “the frequency and visibility of wardens and security patrols” following recent anti-social incidents.

A spokesperson for the local authority said: “Our parks and public spaces are for everyone to enjoy safely.

“In response to a recent rise in anti-social behaviour, this weekend we have stepped up the frequency and visibility of wardens and security patrols.

“Community Safety Wardens are currently delivering additional patrols across the borough, and are now patrolling every Thursday – Sunday, 5pm – 12pm.
