PSNI say lives are at risk after stones thrown at cars on M2

Police have hit out at those responsible for throwing stones at vehicles travelling on the M2 in Newtownabbey.

Commenting on the incidents, a PSNI spokesperson said: “We are getting repeated calls about stoning incidents on the M2 motorway from both Arthur Bridge in Newtownabbey and the Greencastle slip road in north Belfast.

“If you are the driver of a vehicle travelling at 70mph on the M2 and this happens your windscreen, you don’t stand much of a chance of not crashing into someone else.

“If this behaviour continues someone is going to lose their life or end up with life changing injuries.

“Neighbourhood officers from Newtownabbey and Castle Neighbourhood Team, Tennent Street, are working closely with local community groups, councillors and other statutory partner agencies to combat this extremely serious issue.

“There is no excuse for throwing anything onto the path of oncoming traffic. Find something better to do with your time.

“At the very least you will be arrested for criminal damage. At the worst you could find yourself responsible for the death of someone else.”

Similar incidents were reported to police in March. At the time officers issued a warning to the young people who were involved in throwing stones at cars and trains in the Fortwilliam and Greencastle areas.
