'Depressed' man stole items of no use to him

A BALLYMENA man who stole items, which he later admitted were of no use to him, from a supermarket suffers from depression, his solicitor told the local Magistrates Court.

Emma McCann was speaking on behalf of Sydney Russell (39), of Moat Road, who admitted stealing a scarf, chicken fajitas, M&M peanuts and dog treats on September 30.

During interview by police, Russell admitted the offences and told police he had no use for any of the items.

Ms McCann said: “He suffers from quite significant depression.”

Sentencing was adjourned until January 4, in order for pre-sentence probation reports to be compiled on the defendant.

DIstrict Judge Des Perry said he hoped that probation could help Russell, adding: “I can’t quite understand why someone of your age suddenly turns to highly ineffective crime.”
