Deteriorating Queen’s Quay concern

THE deterioration of Londonderry’s Queen’s Quay at a number of sections above the River Foyle water line prompted Roads Service to initiate a survey of the thoroughfare’s structural integrity and load bearing capacity late last year with a report due imminently.

Roads Service wrote to the City Engineer John Kelpie last November advising of the intended survey and informing him of its intention to provide a report early in 2011.

In a letter to the City Engineer, Terry Fulton, Roads Service Network Development Manager advised the results would be of relevance to Council on two fronts.

“Firstly, the council car park is we think the same construction and age as part of the Queen’s Quay car park. And secondly, the intention to hold future events on the Quay requires us to fully appreciate it load bearing capacity,” he wrote.

Mr Fulton pointed out that “previous surveys of the Quay confirmed that the underwater elements of the structure appeared to be in good condition; however other elements above the water line were showing levels of deterioration.”

Subsequently a detailed inspection and structural assessment at sample locations of the Quay was commissioned.

“The result of this work combined with the previous inspections will allow us to assess the condition of the structure and inform us about the bearing capability of the Quay in its present state,” wrote Mr Fulton.
