Festive plans are debated by councillors

Traditionally the Christmas lights switch-on in the town is organised by the local churches.

Recently Banbridge District Councillors debated whether the event this year should also involved local community groups, however, they were told that despite being asked, no community groups had expressed an interest in assisting with the festive event.

At a recent meeting of the Council’s Leisure and Development Committee, members discussed the arrangements for the town’s festive season.

During the discussion Councillor Marie Hamilton suggested that consideration should be given to the provision of coloured lights in Banbridge town centre.

Councillor John Hanna also proposed that the Banbridge Christmas lights switch-on should be a community led event.

However, the Council’s Director of Leisure and Development reminded members that the stage event at the official switch-on is organised by the Banbridge Clergy Fellowship.

Councillor Ian Burns explained that approximately 50% of the town is currently not represented by community groups.

The Council’s Head of Regeneration advised the committee that community groups had been invited to assist with various elements of the Christmas lights switch-on event, however, no groups had indicated an interest in taking part.

This year’s Christmas lights switch-on in Banbridge town centre has been planned for Friday November 38.

The event will include a carol service, street performers, walkabout characters and the arrival of Santa Claus.
