Fine and suspended prison term for Crumlin haulier

A Crumlin haulier has been fined £4,500 and given suspended sentence for waste offences

Nigel Irwin of Cameron Contracts, Ballydonaghy Road, Crumlin was fined £4,500 and given a three month suspended jail sentence for waste offences at Antrim Crown Court on Tuesday.

Mr Irwin pleaded guilty to a failure to comply with a Notice to provide information to the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) and failure to complete Duty of Care waste documentation. This was in respect of the illegal disposal of recyclable plastic waste at a farm at 90 Moira Road, Nutts Corner, Crumlin, Co Antrim.

When officers from the NIEA visited the site in November 2013, they found around 280 tonnes of commercially processed plastic waste, partially buried in a trench on farmland. Further investigation found Mr Irwin had taken this segregated and processed plastic waste from an authorised waste management company and brought it to the site for disposal.

He facilitated payment to the farmer for disposal of waste at the site. The farmer has been previously convicted in relation to the illegal disposal of waste on this land. Mr Irwin was order to pay court costs of £1,150.20
