Girls match boys grade for grade at Carrick Grammar

The co-educational school is bucking the national trend with the top boys matching the top girls grade for grade, said principal Kieran Mulvenna.

“Thanks to the dedication of teachers, the support of parents and the hard work of pupils our 2014 GCSE results have broken school records,” Mr Mulvenna added.

“From over 1,000 GCSE entries over 43 percent were achieved at grades A or A*; some 92 percent of our Year 12 pupils have achieved at least seven GCSEs including English and Mathematics, and over 80 students now have at least nine GCSE passes.

“Congratulations to Sam Brodison, Erin Curry, Katherine Dick, Nathan Fugard, Erin McAllister, Sarah McAtamney, Philip McCullough and Aaron Stevenson who between them have amassed an outstanding 41 A* grades and 42 grade As.

“Well done too to Sophia Livie, Kirsty McClean, Sophie Grier and Rachel Hall with 21 A*s, 15 As and five grade Bs between them.”

Fellow high achievers included Jessica Logan with four A* grades and five As; Philip Hoy with two A* grades, five As and three Bs; and Rachel Love with two A*s and seven As.

“Changes to the way in which GCSE candidates are tested have meant that this year’s cohort of teachers, pupils (and therefore, of course, parents) have had to endure increased pressure. I roundly applaud all the determination, hard work and commitment that have led to such resounding success,” Mr Mulvenna said.

“And lest I be taken aside by my head of Mathematics, Keith Marshall, I must not forget to congratulate the 52 Year 11 pupils whom we entered for an early GCSE in Mathematics – with 25 A*s, 20 As and seven Bs this group of fledgling mathematicians are off to a flying start.”
