Google to remove town bonfire picture

Google has agreed to remove the picture of the Edgarstown bonfire, which appears as the top image on the online map, following criticism.

DUP councillor Jonathan Buckley said the purpose of an image is to direct people to a location and the bonfire is in place for only one month in a year.

He added, “A picture of a permanent landmark would be much more appropriate.”

Former SDLP councillor Eamon McNeill said the image creates a “bad first impression” of the town. He said, “Times have changed. Portadown has changed and our public image should reflect that.

“A much better representation of our modern, forward-facing town would be our thriving industrial park, our newly renovated People’s Park or indeed our prolific sports grounds, Shamrock Park, Tir na nOg GAC or Chambers Park.”

Lurgan’s main image is of Brownlow House while keying in Belfast brings up a picture of Stormont.

A Google spokesperson said the company was in the process of removing the bonfire photo as the main image.
