Governors agree name for new post-primary school

The interim board of governors established to oversee the merger of Monkstown Community School and Newtownabbey Community High has agreed the name for the new post-primary school.

As was revealed in last week’s Times, the new school is due to open in September 2015, but a final decision on whether or not the school will be located in Monkstown or Rathcoole has yet to be taken by the North Eastern Education and Library Board. That decision has been put on hold until after the local government elections on May 22.

At their meeting on Wednesday, April 9, the interim board of governors agreed that the new school should be called ‘Abbey Community College’.

After the meeting, the newly elected chairman, Tim O’Neill and vice-chair, Susan O’Connor, who are both parent representatives on the interim board, released a joint statement, saying: “The early decision on the name of the school marks an exciting first step in our work to establish a ground breaking new school and demonstrates that the interim board of governors has made a determined start to its work.”

The 16-member board will be responsible for the preparation for the establishment of the new school ahead of September 1, 2015.
