The Colleen Pipe Band member also won the Scottish Champion of Champions Trophy, having notched up the most points in five major competitions.

His dad Alan said the standard was very high this year and that although Jamie had put in a very good performance, they were still on tenterhooks until the winner was announced.

He added, “The competition is judged on straight marching and flourishing and it was the flourishing which won it for Jamie. It’s not just the height the mace is thrown but the variety and skill.”

Jamie was supported on the sidelines by his dad, mum Lorraine and brothers Matthew and Harry.

The Clounagh JHS pupil is also a keen footballer, and plays for Annagh United Under 14s.

Following him up to a close second on Saturday was Tandragee girl Kathryn McKeown, of Battlehill Pipe Band, who won the Championship in Moira two weeks ago. Third place went to Katie Bicker, Marlcaoo and District Pipe Band. All three attend the Co Armagh Drum Major Class taken by Andrea Gibson from Tandragee.

Another pupil of Andrea’s, Lucas Adamson from Belfast, was placed fifth.

Jamie and Kathryn will be battling it out for the top prize tomorrow (Saturday) at Portrush for the title of Northern Ireland Champion of Champions.
