John Finlay elected as Housing Council new Chair

The first meeting of the Northern Ireland Housing Council under the new local government structure took place on 23 April 2015.

The Housing Council is an advisory body and its Members held their Annual General Meeting and subsequently appointed Councillor John Finlay from Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council as Chairman.

“The Housing Council has an important role to play in developing and monitoring housing and other government policies. Decent affordable housing is a primary need for many in our society.

“There are many challenges and important issues to be addressed over the coming months in relation to the Social Housing Reform Programme which will develop new structures for the delivery of social housing in Northern Ireland.

“The Housing Council are committed to supporting the Minister for Social Development by working with the Housing Executive and housing associations to ensure that housing need is addressed and good housing services are delivered to communities across Northern Ireland.

“As Chairman I will endeavour to carry on the good work carried out by the Housing Council over the past 43 years and ensure the Housing Council continues to discuss and address key issues with those responsible for making decisions relating to housing and other related matters.”
