Lisburn train station will be protected

Lisburn Councillor Alexander Redpath had sought assurances from the Minister that the future of Lisburn’s city centre train station would be protected following the announcement that work was to begin imminently on the development of the new halt at the former South Eastern Regional College at Knockmore.

“Lisburn is sorely in need of a park and ride service in Knockmore.

“There is very limited parking at the current Lisburn site and this is causing problems for residents in the surrounding areas.

“Also the central location of Lisburn Station makes it difficult to get too during rush hour and with parking problems many commuters miss their trains.

“The proposed new station will provide 400 secure parking places in an easily accessible location.

“However we still need a central Lisburn stop for those who are dependent on public transport to access the city centre.

“I am glad the Minister responded to me so promptly and in such a clear and unambiguous manner.

“I am hugely grateful to the Minister for his assistance in this matter.”

Minister for Regional Development Danny Kennedy MLA added: “I can advise that the demolition work is necessary to secure the site for Translink’s proposed plan to construct a new halt at Lisburn West and provide Park and Ride facilities at it.

“The project is still at an early stage and Translink is currently preparing a business case for it.

“When the project is complete, an additional stop will be provided on the railways network.

“The project will have no impact on the existing Lisburn Station which will continue to operate fully.”
