Looking back... UDA hit out at death notice

The UDA announced in March 1988 that it would never meet with the Independent DUP group in Newtownabbey.

A statement released by the South East Antrim brigade claimed that the IDUP placed a death notice in the Belfast Telegraph following the death of John McMichael.

It said: “We have never met nor now intend to meet with the IDUP. From a source within this so-called loyalist group we have been told they knew thousands of people would be reading the death notices and thought this was a good opportunity to promote their name as well as letting everyone think that in some way they were associated with the UDA. This is not the case and we totally deplore this type of sick, cheap publicity. It will never be forgotten about within the South East Antrim area.”
