Martin McGuinness to contest Foyle in Assembly poll

Sinn Féin MLA and deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness, is set to make a dramatic return to the Foyle constituency in the forthcoming Assembly election, the '˜Journal' has learned.

It is understood Mr McGuinness (pictured) will seek his party’s nomination to contest the Stormont poll in the Foyle constituency.

A formal announcement of the move is expected to be made at a major Sinn Féin event at the Millennium Forum tomorrow.

The party is holding the annual general meeting of its Cúige Uladh in the Derry venue and up to 600 people are expected to attend, including senior party leaders.

Sinn Féin sources say the move is part of Sinn Féin’s campaign to win three seats 
in Derry.

“Martin McGuinness’ positive leadership would be a real boost to the people of the Derry and will help build on the great work already carried out by Maeve McLaughlin and Raymond McCartney,” a source said.

“This is a strategic decision to consolidate the delivery of key projects for the north-west, including the expansion of Magee, the upgrades of the A5 and A6 roads and creating employment.

“Martin has been the driving force behind the progress that has been made and three Sinn Féin seats in Foyle is the best way to ensure that delivery continues,” the source added.

Sinn Féin already have two seats in the Foyle constituency held by Maeve McLaughlin and Raymond McCartney – both of whom are also expected to contest the upcoming election.

Mr. McGuinness has represented Mid Ulster in the Assembly since 1998 and has been deputy First Minister since 2007.
