Mid Ulster MLA’s come out to support Chest, Heart and Stroke

MID Ulster MLA’s have urged local constituents to prioritise personal well-being and support the work of the Northern Ireland Chest, Heart and Stroke Association (NICHS).

Speaking about the recent visit by the NICHS to Stormont, DUP MLA Ian McCrea said: “I was delighted to support Chest Heart and Stroke when they visited Stormont last week to promote the excellent and vital work they carry out. Chest, heart and stroke illnesses are the biggest killer in our community as it is estimated that in Northern Ireland 10 people today will suffer a heart attack, 90 people will have a stroke and 1 in 8 deaths will result from respiratory failure.

“Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke work with individuals to find the best way of coping with their condition through a personal care plan tailored to them. Support for the families is also provided.

“With these types of conditions prevention is better than cure which is why Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke have introduced school programmes designed to reduce levels of these conditions by teaching and promoting healthy eating, exercise and the danger of smoking. I commend Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke on the important work they do and I would encourage everyone to take the time to get a health assessment.”

UUP MLA Sandra Overend, also encouraged encouraging constituents to prioritise personal well-being, following a visit by Northern Ireland Chest, Heart and Stroke Nurses to Stormont recently.

Mrs Overend said: “Chest, heart and stroke illnesses are the biggest killer in Northern Ireland, with 10 people suffering a heart attack, and 90 individuals having a stroke on a daily basis. Indeed, 20 people pass away each day due to a chest, heart or stroke related illness, and approximately 200,000 people in our Province are currently living with a long term heart, lung or stroke condition. These statistics make serious reading, and affect not only the individual, but also the family members who suffer the stress that serious illness brings to their loved one.”

Mrs. Overend added: “In light of the facts, I would strongly encourage constituents to monitor their health and take advantage of the excellent work carried out by Northern Ireland Chest, Heart and Stroke. This ranges from practical and emotional support for people going through very difficult times, to working with individuals to find the best way of coping with their condition using tailored plans. They also provide support for families of sufferers, and put a strong emphasis on educating the next generation about the importance of exercise, eating healthily and the dangers of smoking through their schools programme.

“I am very impressed by the commitment and effort of Northern Ireland Chest, Heart and Stroke within our local community, and I urge my constituents to enjoy a healthy and active lifestyle.”
