Lagan Valley DUP MLA Paul Givan and Councillor James Tinsley met with officials to discuss the progress of Public Realm Works taking place in Lisburn City Centre.

Mr Givan said, “I was pleased to learn that contractors are addressing defects identified in the finishing standard in some areas as well as concerns of ponding along Bow Street.

Engineers from the Consultancy firm and Roads Service are carrying out monthly inspections in order to assess the standard of work and the overall project is on time to be completed by April 2015.  I have received assurances that during the busy period approaching Christmas, no businesses will be blocked and contractors are working to create the best environment possible for traders at this important time.

“When complete in a number of months I believe this major project will increase the vibrancy of Lisburn City Centre. Already we are seeing the number of vacant premises decrease and the finished product will also improve the overall image of Lisburn and encourage more shoppers, visitors and investors to Lisburn.”

Alderman Tinsley said, “I am content that outstanding issues are being dealt with and that the overall works on the public realm are proceeding according to plan. Our Councillors are proactively engaging on this issue and holding to account those responsible for delivering this multi-million pound scheme.”

However, one pensioner who suffers from arthritis contacted the Ulster Star complaining about the lack of seating in Bow Street and said that he will no longer shops in Lisburn because of it.

“I have been going into Lisburn for years and I cannot walk far without needing a seat,” he said. “There are none in Bow Street. Who has taken them away? It’s a disgrace.”

A spokesperson for the council said, “Seating has been placed temporarily throughout the city centre public realm where it is feasible to provide this.

“As part of the completed scheme there will be new seating located in the City Centre, along with new street furniture. The new seating installation will begin in January.”
