New book will aid genealogy in Larne

The book , published by the Larne branch of the Family History Society, is entitled ‘Resting in Larne’s Green Land’.

It details gravestone inscriptions and interments dating from 1904 inthe old section of Larne’s Greenland cemetery, on the Upper Cairncastle Road.

The launch evening began with acknowledgement of a number of people whose contributions made the book possible, including Jim McKinty, a long term member of Larne branch, who tirelessly edited the publication.

Felix McKillop, who is president of the North of Ireland Family History Society, contributed a very detailed introduction for the book.

In the presence of Larne Mayor, Cllr Martin Wilson, Liam Kelly and members of the Larne branch, the authors also thanked Larne Borough Council’s Parks and Cemeteries Department for their assistance, and in particular Margaret Duffin for her guidance with the researching of Books of Interment, and David Ringland for his assistance at Greenland Cemetery.

The grave inscriptions were transcribed by members of Larne Family History Society and thanks were made to those members who completed that task.

Cllr Wilson declared the book launched.

The publication includes maps of the cemetery location and the cemetery plan.

Grave inscriptions are listed alphabetically and references provided by Larne Family History Society and Larne Borough Council make it easier to locate a specific grave. It is no small feat, as there are almost 2,000 graves in the old section of the cemetery.

The book is priced at £15 and can be purchased in The Book Nook, or at Apsleys in the town.
