New hygiene scheme not on the menu yet for Lisburn diners

ANYONE logging on to check the hygiene rating of local eateries on the much trumpeted new Food Standards Agency website will be left feeling a little peckish.

Because while 17 councils in Northern Ireland have signed up to the new scheme, Lisburn is not one of them.

However, Lisburn City Council say they hope that will change in the near future.

A Council spokesperson confirmed this week they had applied for funding to convert their ‘Scores on the Doors’ scheme to the new national Food Hygiene Rating Scheme.

Lisburn City Council is one of just two Councils in Northern Ireland which is still operating the ‘Scores on the Doors’ scheme, which has proved successful in the past.

Seventeen District Councils in Northern Ireland have implemented the FSA’s Food Hygiene Rating Scheme, and more are planning to join in the future.

A Council spokesperson said: “Lisburn City Council has successfully operated the ‘Scores on the Doors’ food safety scheme for a number of years with information on the scores achieved by local food businesses made available on the Council’s website.

“Following the recent introduction of the national Food Hygiene Rating Scheme the Council has applied to the Food Standards Agency for funding to convert to the new Scheme.

“It is anticipated that when such funding has been received the Council will implement the new hygiene rating system in place of the ‘Scores on the Doors’ scheme.”
