One councillor for Gallipoli

ONE Craigavon councillor will make the trip to Turkey this year for the Gallipoli Pilgrimage.

Although the names of two councillors were proposed it was thought that one was enough because of the cost of the trip.

The price is 1,200 per person for the trip which takes place from March 19-25 this year.

The two names proposed were Councillor Ronnie Harkness and Alderman Samuel Gardiner.

Alderman Stephen Moutray said that given the price his party, the DUP, would not be putting forward anyone, especially in the economic downturn.

Councillor Harkness said that the 10th (Irish) Division were involved at Gallipoli and 3,000 Irish soldiers killed.

“A large number of young men from Lurgan and Portadown were members of the 10th Irish,” he added.

Alderman Sydney Anderson thought that one representative would be enough and he knew Councillor Harkness had a great interest in the subject. He would not oppose him going.

Alderman Gardiner said he had another commitment at the time and added that there would be no better person than Councillor Harkness to represent the council.
