Debt support service expands to help people impacted during pandemic

The Antrim (CAP) Debt Centre, based at Greystone Presbyterian Church, but also supported by First Antrim Presbyterian Church and Ballyclare Presbyterian Church, have appointed a new debt coach after seeing an increase in demand for their services.

Since opening in May 2012 the centre has seen a steady growth as word has spread of their uniquely in-depth, caring and face-to-face help.

Commenting on the development, Antrim CAP Debt Centre Manager, Irene Kilpatrick said: “It has been such a frustration to have a waiting list, particularly as many of our clients are vulnerable and need help straight away.

“So, it’s great we can now offer more support to local people, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The centre has appointed Heather Lawther, a nurse, as a debt centre coach as she deeply cares about seeing people being released from debt, poverty and their causes.”

Heather added: “From my work I know if you are struggling with your health, a bereavement or unemployment managing your finances can be difficult.”

Both Irene and Heather would, in normal times, visit every client in their own home working with each person until they become debt free.

However due to Covid-19 restrictions these appointments will take place over the phone or using online video technology.
