Cllr Danny Donnelly (Alliance) and Cllr Andrew Clarke (DUP) took to social media at the weekend to detail how they would be testing the bins.

Commenting on Facebook, Cllr Donnelly said: “As a Larne councillor I volunteered to trial the proposed new ‘Triple Stack’ bin system. It was delivered today (July 25). We are a family of four and we will use it for the next few months and post updates of how we get on with it.”

Cllr Clarke stated: “I requested one of these triple stack bins to see how bad it is. This would replace our blue bin. I will let you know how it goes.”

The new bin system is subject to funding from DAERA and would take between 18 months and two years to roll out.

Some householders have said on social media that they believe the new bins will not be big enough and could result in more fly-tipping.

However, the council maintains that “triple stack is the way forward”.
