Zoe Verdon, together with her husband and daughter Poppy, decided to have a party mark VE day and remember those to made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

“Everyone out there knows of someone that was in one of the world wars,” said Zoe. “My granny was a state registered nurse in England at the time of the war. She travelled from Monaghan to England for her training and worked in England as a state registered nurse until the war ended. My grandad’s brother was in the RAF. He was an air bomber. HG signed up for 25 missions and on the 24 or 25 mission coming back he was bombed down eight miles from base no survivors or bodies were located.

“On my husband’ss side there were far more that fought during the war and to mark respect for everyone in our family we decided to have our own VE day party.

“My husband and I dressed up in army uniforms and our little girl Poppy, who’s only 2, was dressed in camo as well.

“We had bunting up, as well as union flags and a Navy Flag, as my husband’s brother is in the Navy at present.

“We set up an army tent, had army radios out for our display, as well as amo boxes and army vehicles. Our front window had VE day posters, more bunting and tape over some of the windows like they had during the war.

“We even had 1940s music playing. We had such a great day and Poppy won a virtual VE Day fancy dress event on Facebook.”
