Riverdance founders back culture bid

RIVERDANCE founders Moya Doherty and John McColgan have backed Londonderry's bid to be named UK City of Culture 2013.

Moya Doherty and John McColgan co-founders of the smash hit theatrical phenomenon believes success in the City of Culture campaign would afford Derry-Londonderry a similar opportunity to share Irish culture with the world.

"On behalf of all us at Riverdance we would like to extend our warmest congratulations to you and the team at becoming finalists in the UK City of Culture 2013 competition.

"Derry Londonderry is rich in history and culture and a win would result in a unique opportunity to share the culture of Northern Ireland and Ireland with the world.

"Irish dance is unique to our region and sets you apart from the competition. We are delighted to be able to provide you with this letter of support and believe that this is a wonderful opportunity to share your story with the world.

"At Riverdance we understand the importance of culture, and dance in particular, in showcasing the great Irish traditions of dance and performance around the globe.

"For over 15, years, Riverdance has performed for 21 million people worldwide in over 300 venues and 32 countries. Should Derry-Londonderry win the bid 2013, we would be delighted to participate in a dance event or programme.

"This is an exciting time for Northern Ireland and the bid is a great opportunity for cultural forces to unite and bring the region one step closer to lasting peace. We wish you every success with the bid," said Moya.

The city's status as a hub of Irish dancing talent was underlined when almost 400 Irish Dancers lined the banks of the Foyle for Londonderry's own Riverdance at the weekend.

Groups and dance schools from across Ireland put their best foot forward to support the RNLI in this charity raising event. Current members of the Riverdance troop Claire and Mark McCole also stepped up to support the record attempt.

Speaking during the event, Claire said it was great to see so many young people participating together in such a worthy event.

"There were so many boys and girls of all ages supporting the record attempt today, I thought it was fantastic. It really brought together culture, talent and energy to achieve this record and raise money for the RNLI. Well done to everyone involved."

Having seen the local talent on show at the world record attempt, Mark was in no doubt that the city is brimming with potential just waiting be tapped by a success in the City of Culture Bid.

"Events such as these create reasons for young people to use their skills and talent and that's why I think the city's Culture bid is such an opportunity.

"It will encourage young people to get more involved in culture and this can only bring positive results. The city has great potential and energy and there's no better place to win this title."
