Row over boys’ new uniform

IN March 1969 the new headmaster at Wallace, Mr NN Gilpin, found himself in hot water over the new school uniform he had chosen for sixth formers.

One of the parents, Mr JO Gill, of Beechill, Aghalee, described the uniform as “completely impractical, not to mention an extra expense.”

All of the boys were expected to wear the official terylene-cotton overcoat which was off-white, complaints were made that the overcoat would not manage to stay clean for long.
