Surf’s up for May

Panto dame May McFettridge joined computer novices and volunteers in Carrick library today for Silver Surfers’ Day.

Organised by Business in the Community NI, the event is aimed at getting older people comfortable with using computers and the internet, aided by volunteers from organisations such as the Northern Ireland Housing Executive and Belfast Harbour.

“People shouldn’t be left behind in the last millennium; age isn’t an excuse,” said May. “They can get up in the morning and while they’re boiling the kettle, switch on the computer and check their emails, order their groceries or buy a few things on Amazon.”

“We’re trying to encourage people to come in and use the library’s services if they don’t have a computer at home,” added BITCNI’s Helen Bowman. “We even get people who are in their 80s or 90s coming in and learning how to use things like Skype so they can keep in touch with family members abroad.”
