TEENS USE SOCIAL MEDIA TO ORGANISE STREET FIGHT

Police believe that a fight between groups of young people at the Station in Coleraine on Friday, may have been organised through social media.

Officers responded to reports of large groups of teenagers gathering and fighting in the Railway Road and Ballycastle Road areas of the town on Friday afternoon.

The young people who were wearing school uniforms from various schools in the area, dispersed upon the arrival of officers.

Police have confirmed that no arrests were made at the time, and that no reports of any injuries were made to police.

Parents have been asked by police to advise their children about the dangers of getting caught up in this sort of behaviour.

Sergeant Siobhan Watt said: “Parents need to advise their children about the dangers of getting caught up in this sort of behaviour.

What may start off between one or two people could quickly escalate and the potential for serious injury cannot be underestimated.

“Younger children in particular could find themselves being drawn into a situation that is potentially very dangerous.

“I am urging schools, parents and community groups to help reinforce this message to our young people.

“I am also asking anyone with information about this incident to come forward and tell us what you know. The number to call is 101.”
