Threatened to strip naked in road

Christopher David Walker, Banbridge Road, Waringstown, had admitted disorderly behaviour on August 13 this year when he appeared at a previous sitting of Banbridge Magistrates Court.

The case had been adjourned so that a pre-sentence report could be obtained.

The court heard that shortly after 10pm near the Coach nightclub the defendant was making a nuisance of himself.

He was in the middle of the road, shouting and swearing. He was highly intoxicated.

As police went to speak to him Walker ran off and once again he started shouting and swearing outside Friar Tuck’s.

Walker threatened to urinate on a police car and to strip naked in the road.

When spoken to he threatened to assault a constable. He had relevant previous convictions and was in breach of a suspended sentence imposed in November 2013.

A barrister representing the defendant said that in the last 18 months his mental health had been deteriorating and he was suffering from anxiety and depression.

He added that his consumption of alcohol and the medication he was on influenced his actions. He was a young man who has had his difficulties.

Deputy District Judge Laura Ivers said it was an ugly incident and it was difficult to see the best way forward because the background of previous offending concerned the court.

For the disorderly behaviour offence she sentenced Walker to two months in prison, suspended for 12 months.

She also ordered the other suspended sentence to run concurrently with this term making a total of six months in custody, suspended for 12 months.
